DAVE. Rick and I put more thought into the guitar on this CD, trying to get a sound suitable for each song, rather than the one sound all the way through. This might seem like an obvious thing for most bands but for me, as the sort of guitarist who would usually just plug in, turn it up and play, was quite a step forward. In the end I just turned the guitar's selector switch from treble to rhythm and bingo! Rick did twiddle some knobs too.
RICK. Apples is about the memories John has of his childhood. Nice image John! The high organ riff was backing vocals originally, but I'm more than happy with this Hammond sound. I loved Jon Lord!
JOHN. This song is about my Dad who passed away many years ago. I guess it's about a childhood I never had because my Dad was relatively old when I was born so Rick almost got it right. There are so many things going on in this song. Love it.
lyrics
IT'S TOO LATE TO TALK NOW
WHERE'S YOUR HISTORY FOR ME?
THERE'S NO FOUR-LEAFED CLOVER
FIELDS AS FAR AS I CAN SEE
I KNOW THAT YOU CARED
YOU WERE ALWAYS THERE
SITTING ON YOUR SHOULDERS
PICKING APPLES FROM A TREE
MISTY-EYED AND LONGING
HOLLOW MEMORIES FOR ME
I KNOW THAT YOU CARED
YOU WERE ALWAYS THERE
FATHER SO MUCH OLDER
NEVER SAID THAT MUCH TO ME
GLAD I GRABBED THAT LAST TIME
NOW YOU'RE OUT OF REACH TO ME
I KNOW THAT YOU CARED
YOU WERE ALWAYS THERE
