DAVE. A right change of pace and a band a little out of their comfort zone, maybe. Rick plays the acoustic guitar on this one and I supply a heavily effected (as in guitar effects) guitar solo and some twiddly bits. My favourite section is the second verse, with Rick's ooohs and some subtle, for once, guitar from me. I hope this song will partially fill the void left by Roger Whitaker. It's just a shame about the lack of whistling.
RICK. This Summer originally had drums, bass and electric guitar on it but John felt it was too full on. So I played some acoustic guitar and worked out a basic string arrangement. I love Dave's bits and pieces on this but I must say I really like my little oohs on verse two. Get me! John's vocal performances throughout this record are great. We've settled on a way of recording his voice that seems to work for everything we do. No autotune required. Not that I have that sort of technology anyway!
JOHN. I have never recorded a song before without drums or Dave letting fly on the guitar. This is part of the 'Eternal Sunshine/Atlantic' friendship trilogy of songs. It was written in the summer of 2018 and I wanted it to sound summery. We hadn't really rehearsed this song much and so we really started from scratch. Rick worked wonders on this. Dave's solo shimmers.
lyrics
I CAN SEE YOU
FLYING OVER MOUNTAINS
COMING IN TO LAND
YOU'RE HOMEWARD BOUND
BUT I WAS DREAMING
HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS
WHEN EVERYTHING IS LOST
YOU MAKE NO SOUND
I CAN'T FIND A REASON
TO STOP AND SHOUT OUT LOUD
YOU'RE MY SUMMER SEASON
IF YOU COME I'LL STAND UP PROUD
I WILL SAVE YOU
PULL YOU FROM THE WRECKAGE
THEN YOU'LL KNOW
WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT
BUT YOU WERE DREAMING
HOME IS WHERE MY HEART IS
IT'S NEVER GONNA WORK
THIS TIME AROUND
